What questions to ask in requirement elicitation?

A pivotal part of arranging for requirement elicitation is analyzing what questions to be asked to stakeholders involved in the project. Being Business analyst, you surely want to be ready with set of questions which apparently saves your as well as stakeholder’s time, at the same time you would need clear requirements to be fetched which is very imperative. In an organization not every stakeholder is going to give you all ears or invest their time in you, hence you need to be well and all prepared with the structured questionnaire
To gather precise and clear requirement, as a BA will make use of strong tool that is nothing but 5W 1H
Below are the questions which are listed under 5W and 1H Category:
Who: This type of question targets on analyzing the stakeholder involved in problem or requirement. Questions can be like ‘Who are the primary stakeholders, Users, Customers or beneficiaries’ or who will be impacted by proposed solution?
What: This type of questions concentrate on activities needs to be performed and processes involved in problem or requirement. What is the need of proposed change? What is the current state or system? What are the appropriate outcomes or deliverables?
When: This is the type of questions that mainly emphasizes on time frame for problem or requirement. When did the problem occurred or when it is expected to occur? When the solution needs to be proposed? When the project should come to an end or what will be timeline for the project?
Where: This type of questions spotlights on location of problem or requirement. Where does this business opportunity come from? Where can the business problem arise? Where are the end users located? Where are the bottlenecks or inefficiencies in the organization?
Why: This type of questions pay direct attention to Why is this opportunity important to organization? Why is important to identify and address this issue? Why is the proposed solution or approach the best option?
How: This is the type of question which emphasize on How will the proposed solution or approach address the business problem or opportunity? How will it be implemented? How will it be measured or evaluated for success?
