What is BRD? How is it different from SRS?

A Business Requirement Document is a report which describes the problems the project is aiming to solve and outcomes necessary to deliver value. It also describes business needs and business objectives. This BRD document is the starting point for any project. The BRD means nothing but the customer’s needs and requirements, weather the customer is an internal customer or external customer. It captures high level requirements of a project.

A BRD is all about setting the customer’s expectations. This document provides clarity to a project. A business requirement document captures expectations of business form the project. A BRD document defines the purpose of the project, scope of the project. It will be the reference document for identification of business requirements. It defines the business opportunity which the project will bring. A BRD document will also define what are the available opportunities and the benefits of the project, then what the current state of the project is and what is the target state of the project. A BRD is nothing but the agreement between business and delivery team.

A business requirement document is needed for documentation of business requirements, so if multiple people want to refer regarding the business requirements of a project so they can refer the one single document BRD.

Then it is required to communicate between different stakeholders regarding project, because this document will shared with multiple stakeholder for the reviews and comments. And it is important to be clear what are the in scope requirements and what are the out scope requirements for the project.

It is important to follow the standard structure for BRD like-

  1. Collect the requirements
  2. Analyze the requirements
  3. Define the scope
  4. Find the phases of the project
  5. Assessment of project
  6. Assessment of impact.

 

A Business Requirement Document is different from System requirement Specification (SRS) as BRD contains high level requirements and are stated from the business prospective whereas SRS contains detailed requirements of system or solution. A BRD contains stakeholder identification whereas SRS contains assumptions and constraints. SRS contains detailed functional and non- functional requirements along with use cases. Then capturing the user interface, data model, business rules, process information all of these are the part will be SRS which is not a part of the BRD.
