What are the basic requirements of a business analyst

A Business Analyst’s main job is to gather information and elicit stakeholders’ actual needs and things of that nature which can add value to a business. Business analyst elicit, analyse, investigate, communicate and investigate requirements in order to determine underlying issues and causes, improving process and changing policies.

Business analysts (BAs) are in charge of bridging the gap between IT and the business by evaluating processes, identifying requirements, and presenting executives and stakeholders using data-driven suggestions and reports. The role diversity comes from the wide variety of functions that this can be applied to. For example, BA will work with both client and development team. From the client he will elicit the requirements in their business. Development team will build the product as per client needs to fulfil the requirement. BA will coordinate between both the parties and ensure that the developed solution fulfils clients requirements. 

Depending on where they work, BAs might be either generalists or specialists. They need to be adaptable, logical, and effective communicators.


Business Skills for Business Analysts-

  1. Analytical thinking and Problem-Solving: Large amount of data needs to be analysed on a daily basis, and thus analytical problem-solving skills are essential. Business Analysts must establish a common understanding of the issue, the potential solutions of the problem, and determine the extent of the project. Analytical thinking and problem solving skills are required for business analysts to analyse problems and opportunities effectively, identify which changes may deliver the most value, and work with stakeholders to understand the impact of those changes. BA use various information like diagrams, customer feedback, users guides, stakeholder concerns and choose effective method to analyse issue and solution.
  2. Effective Communication: The requirements and data needs to be presented in a manner such that it can be understood and there is effective communication. The BA should have good communication verbal, non verbal and written. Having the ability to communicate with all types of people is an essential skill for BA.
  3. Creative Thinking: Due to the constant development of new technologies, traditional procedures might no longer be effective. Generating new ideas and concepts helps Business analyst to find alternatives and approaches for problem solving and creating new business opportunities. 
  4. Decision Making- BAs role here to make decisions which is most advantageous for the stakeholders and the enterprise.Gathering relevant data, analysing it, evaluating and analyzing comparable and different possibilities, and selecting the most advantageous option are the stages involved in determining this.
  5. Industry Knowledge: A certain level of industrial expertise is also essential.Business analyst should have knowledge of business, organisation, industry, methodology. Understanding an industry’s position inside a corporation as well as its effects and dependencies on the marketplace and human resources is referred to as having industry knowledge.
  6. Leadership- Influencing and leading includes inspiring others to take actions that enable them to collaborate to achieve common goals and objectives. Business analysts can more effectively accomplish the organization’s shared goals by having a thorough understanding of the individual objectives, demands, and capacities of each stakeholder. Whether or not there are individuals formally reporting to the business analyst, the duty for developing, evaluating, and delivering business analysis information offers potential for leadership and influence.


As you can see, a business analyst must be responsible, have sound management, and use effective communication techniques. This results in the project’s successful completion. A significant amount of documentation work falls under the purview of the business analyst.
