Competencies of a Business Analyst

The basic definition of Competence is the ability of an individual to do a job properly. A competency is a set of defined behaviors that provide a structured guide enabling the identification, evaluation and development of the behaviors in individual employees .

When it comes to the ability of  business analyst, he plays a critical role in a company’s productivity, efficiency and profitability. A business analyst should have communication and interpersonal skills to problem-solving and critical thinking.

A Business Analyst  acts as a liaison(contact) among stakeholders and also he acts as a solution provider that enable the organization to achieve its goals”.

Following are the core competencies of  a business analyst :

Communication Skills 

As an effective communicator or a facilitator, A business analyst must be able to facilitate work meetings, ask the right questions, and actively listen and gather the information. The ability to communicate clearly in person, on conference calls, in meetings , and through email is needed to a Business Analyst .

Problem-Solving  Skills

As a Business Analyst ,he need to be analytical strong or logically strong that includes skills such as ordering, comparing, contrasting, evaluating and selecting. Thus,It provides a logical framework for problem solving and helps to select the best alternative down the range of possibilities.  To be precise a business analyst works to develop a common understanding of problems and determine the  solutions to the project.

Negotiation Skills 

A business analyst acts as a liaison among a variety of people such as: clients, developers, users, management, and IT.  A business analyst must be able to achieve a profitable outcome by showing negotiation skills i.e when two or more people or parties intended to reach a beneficial outcome over one or more issues where a conflict exists with respect to at least one of these issues,then need to be involve to achieve outcome.

Critical Thinking skills

Business analysts must analyze multiple choices before leading the team towards a solution. This requires a critical review of data, documentation, user input surveys, and workflow. They ask probing questions until every issue is evaluated in its entirety and fully understood before a course of action can be determined to resolve the problem.

Besides the core Competencies, business analysts will also be looking for below skills

  1. Ability to Work with Cross-Functional Teams
  2. Ability to Adapt and Quickly Adjust to Change
  3. Creativity in approach
  4. Multi-Tasking
  5. Team work , Presentation skills and Documentation skills
  6. Expertise in tools like MS Visio, Rational Rose, Microsoft Excel,Power point, MS Access and SQL Queries.
  7. Expertise in wire framing tools and prototyping tools
